Let Copilot handle task generation from your content, and use Microsoft To Do or Planner as your central hub for managing and completing those tasks. While Copilot doesn’t yet integrate directly with To Do or Planner, you can still use it to identify and extract actionable items from emails, meeting notes, or documents.

Simply copy and paste those AI-generated tasks into your preferred app to keep everything organized in one place.

Example 1: Extract tasks from meeting notes

  • Prompt to Copilot: “From my meeting notes (attached or in OneNote) identify all follow-up actions and format as a task list with deadlines and priority.”
  • Then: Review the list Copilot generates. Copy/paste the list into Microsoft To Do or Planner as individual tasks. Assign the person and date.

Example 2: Turn an email thread into tasks

  • Prompt to Copilot: “Summarize this email chain and extract all action items into a bulleted list of tasks.”
  • Then: Copy the bulleted list into the notes/ comments section into a new task or create sub-tasks.

The following are other best practices when managing tasks:

  • Prompt clarity matters: The more context you give Copilot (e.g., “from this document”, “with deadlines”, “priority high/low”), the more useful the output.
  • Always review output: AI-generated tasks are drafts. Ensure dates, priorities, responsibilities are correctly set in To Do.
  • Set due dates: After tasks are in To Do or  Planner, set due dates, reminders or so nothing falls through the cracks.
