Microsoft One Note is already a powerful tool for capturing ideas, meeting notes, and project details and when you integrate Copilot, it becomes even smarter. Copilot lets you leverage AI to rewrite, summarize and analyze your notes.
Here are some of the functions that Copilot can do in One Note
- Summarizing long notes or sections.
- Creating task lists and to-dos from your notes.
- Generating new content: agendas, outlines, project plans.
- Rewriting existing text for tone, clarity, or length.

Using Copilot in One Note
- Navigate to Your Notes: Open the notebook and page containing the notes you wish to work with.
- Select Content: If your prompt should only focus on a specific section, highlight or select the text/handwritten notes using Lasso Select for ink/handwritten notes. NOTE: If no content is selected, Copilot will use the entire page as context.
- Open Copilot in One Note: On the Home tab of the ribbon, select the Copilot button. The Copilot pane will open on the right side of One Note. Or click the Copilot icon on the page canvas when it appears.
- Choose your workflow: The Copilot prompt menu is typically divided into categories: Create, Understand, Edit, Ask.
- Create = make new content
- Understand = summarize or analyze existing content
- Edit = improve or refine content
- Ask = interact, question, or get suggestions
- Interact with Copilot: Craft clear prompts (goal + context) to get better results. I.e. “Give me five ideas for a team-building retreat using our notes from last year’s off-site.”
- Integrate with workflow tools: After Copilot generates tasks, push them into To Do, Planner or other task systems.
